BC Hydro Net Metering Program

Discover Renewable Energy Solutions with BC Hydro

Lets explore the benefits of Net Metering Program. With a focus on renewable energy, customers can take control of their electricity usage while contributing to a sustainable future for British Columbia. Net metering helps our customer send back all their excess power produced by our precisely designed and efficient solar power-plant and in-turn get credited for the energy sent, which can be used anytime with BC-Hydro.

How It Works

When you generate more electricity than you need, you feed it back to the BC-Hydro grid and get a generation credit towards your future electricity use. When you don't generate enough to meet your needs, you buy it from us.

Understanding the Process:

  1. Solar Energy Conversion: Solar panels efficiently convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity.
  2. Conversion for Everyday Use: Inverters seamlessly convert DC electricity into alternating current (AC) suitable for homes and businesses.
  3. Maximizing Energy Usage: Generated electricity powers the premises first, with any surplus seamlessly integrated into BC Hydro's distribution grid.
  4. Accurate Measurement: Smart meters meticulously track electricity usage from BC Hydro and surplus energy transmitted to the grid.
  5. Credits and Compensation: Excess generation earns credits toward future bills, with potential compensation for surplus energy on your anniversary date.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Participate?

Customers can participate in BC Hydro's Net Metering Program if their electricity generators meet the following criteria:

  1. Ownership or Lease: Generators must be owned or leased by the customer.
  2. Connection to Distribution System: Seamless integration into BC Hydro's distribution system is essential.
  3. Renewable Resource Utilization: Utilize clean and renewable resources as defined by the Clean Energy Act, like a home solar power plant.
  4. Capacity Limitation: Aggregate nameplate capacity should not exceed 100 kW.
